Introduction |
Posted by: Robert Freels, HHS Learning Center
The Hilltop Learning Center is an independent study program where students are assigned a two hour resource time each day and are expected to complete an additional four hours of homework each day. The resource time gives students access to computer based testing and instruction, the use of technology for essays and reports, opportunity to ask for assistance, and a regular time and quiet place to study.
The format of the Learning Center gives students the opportunity to recover credits if they are behind or to accelerate progress through high school. Students graduating from the Learning Center must complete all graduation requirements for the Sweetwater Union High School District and receive a regular Hilltop High School diploma.
Success in the Learning Center requires self-discipline, self-motivation, and good time management skills. Students who succeed in the Learning Center are developing independent learning skills which will serve them well in college and beyond.

Learning Center Attendance |
Posted by: Robert Freels, HHS Learning Center
Learning Center attendance is based primarily on student work due at the mandatory academic review meeting each week. Homework counts as attendance. A student who does not complete the assigned homework for each meeting is truant for attendance purposes. Missing an academic review meeting is equivalent to being truant for five days of school. Doing less than the assigned amount of homework is also being effectively truant for the amount of homework not completed. Absences should be the exception, not the norm.
Tardies: Promptness is critical in the real world of work. Tardiness or being late on the job is never tolerated by employers. You are tardy if more than five minutes late. Arrive on time and stay for the entire resource time. Each tardy lowers a student’s citizenship grade. Serving teacher detentions may raise the citizenship grade to no more than a “C” with agreement from the teacher. This will affect adversely your citizenship in class if it becomes a continued problem, but more importantly, is reinforcing very bad habits that will follow you throughout life.
