Lancer Football - Saugus 28, Hilltop 26 - Photos

It was a valiant and determined effort. It was exciting high school football. It was 2 points short of victory on the opening night of the 2003 Hilltop Varsity Football Season. Saugus made the long trip down from Los Angeles packing a new coach and an experienced running back and the markings of a young program in a high powered league. The Lancers welcomed them with an improved offense an improved defense and a touch of speed.

B. J. Roberson took the opening kick 90 yards for a score but the Special Teams could not convert the extra point. B. J. followed up with a 46 yard punt return later. Gilbert Tellez established himself as an adequate quarterback with promise for better things. He settled into a quality drive in the 4th quarter when he paired up with Kevin Pike for the third Lancer Touchdown. The Lancer Defense scored the final touchdown when Nate O'Connor carried a 55 yard fumble recovery all the way back.

Under Coach Brian Hay, the new coaching staff has seen an encouraging start to what promises to be a turning point season for Lancer Football
